AI: How to Create Effective Prompts

When it comes to creating effective prompts, it’s all about giving clear instructions and engaging with AI the way you would with a fellow human! Follow these tips to craft prompts that unlock the full potential of AI:

  • Consider your desired outcome: No matter the type of content you want the AI to generate, start by asking yourself, “What result do I hope to achieve?”
  • Structure your prompt with purpose: Place the most important information at the beginning of your prompt.
  • Use natural language: Communicate with AI just as you would with a human.
  • Provide context: Share background information as well as details about the intended audience.
  • Define the task: Try using these words to direct the AI: explain, describe, translate, create, write, predict, advise, imagine, summarize, revise.
  • Be specific: The more precisely worded your prompt, the more precise the generated content will be.

Important Data Security Reminder

Take care when using AI for work. Protect your—and KSU’s—data when using AI by accessing Microsoft Copilot, a powerful AI chatbot, securely: Log in to copilot.microsoft.com with your KSUmail address and password. Verify the Protected icon is visible at the top of the screen.

Many AI chatbots save data you enter and even use it to train their systems. Currently, the only way to use AI securely when handling non-public information is to access Copilot using your KSU credentials as described above. Copilot's data protection includes the following:

  • Encryption—Data sent to and from Copilot is protected every step of the way.
  • Compliance—Copilot follows legal and regulatory requirements for data protection.
  • Data privacy—Conversations with Copilot are not stored by Microsoft; prompts and results are not used to train the AI.

Security Alert: Money Mule Scams

Money mule scams increasingly target students, who are often deceived by fraudsters pretending to be legitimate employers. These criminals lure unsuspecting individuals into illegal money laundering schemes disguised as genuine job opportunities. The consequences can be devastating—even those unaware of their involvement in a crime may face serious legal ramifications, including a criminal record.

To combat this, students, their families, and educators must stay informed, exercise caution with online job offers, and protect sensitive financial information. Awareness campaigns like INTERPOL’s #YourAccountYourCrime initiative play a vital role in educating the public about these scams, promoting vigilance, and fostering safer online behaviors.
